lf you've ever watched Jays gathering nuts, you'll notice a lot of picking up and putting down. This is part of the "weighing in" process. As depicted here in my painting, the first nut is too small, the second is rotten, the third has been parasitized by a beetle larvae and the forth is too green. The fifth nut is perfect and will be the heaviest of all he has tested. As the Jay goes through the process he too becomes perfect,  gaining pure color the closer he gets to success. The Crow and the Woodpecker are competitors for this bounty and have their own rountines for finding the perfect nut.  This painting is marked NFS as it was damaged in my studio fire.
