Understory
The exposed roots of this Bigleaf Maple provide cover and nesting for the resident Winter Wren as well as a support for ferns and wild grape. When Winter comes and the snow fills the foothills and mountains, the Varied Thrush drops below the snowline and moves into the Wren's home range for the season. The story will change when the Thrush leaves and the snow retreats. New birds will pass through and take advantage of the protection the tree offers so the story will continue to change. This painting is marked NFS because it was damaged by fire in my studio.
