Winter Silence is based on my single observation in Algonquin Park of this seldom seen owl. Both the owl and the atmosphere of freshly fallen snow emphasized the profound silence that enveloped me as I spotted the owl and stood perfectly still. The experience was very much one of a heightened sense of the owl and its immediate surroundings, and this was instrumental in guiding the painting along to its completion. I was especially aware of the very different sense of softness, one exhibited by the beautiful plumage of the bird, and the other in the downy texture of resting snow.
