Our cuckoos are essentially tropical birds who visit us for a brief breeding season, then hustle back to the South American tropics for the rest of the year. Though it is fairly common in the eastern United States, the western US population crashed dramatically (in California, it went from about 15,000 pairs to a mere 40 pairs in a hundred years!). After many false starts, the federal government finally listed the western segment of the cuckoo population as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Any actions to protect its riparian habitat will benefit it and many other species, but it won’t be easy, as a warming climate will further stress riparian habitats already rare because of human activities. Seeing or hearing a Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the West is always a special moment.

Original is framed.
