Petrified National Forest in Arizona is a semi-arid, wind-swept landscape where life is a challenge, but the area was far different in the Late Triassic, about 225 million years ago. At that time, land masses were united in the super-continent of Pangaea, and the climate here was humid and subtropical. Enormous trees (now all extinct) occasionally were swept into rivers, then covered with volcanic ash, eventually resulting in mineralization as petrified wood. I have seen ground-dwelling Rock Wrens on these “trees” and thought that this conjunction of ancient and current life would be a fun choice for a painting.
