Widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa except in rain forests and tall grasslands, Glaucidium perlatum is one of about 30 species globally in that genus, many called pygmy-owls.  This fierce little owl can take avian prey, like doves, larger than itself. As it typically hunts in daytime, I chose to portray it as it might be seen above in the canopy, the white-hot sky behind. I have led safaris in East Africa for over four decades, and I believe that we should seek out and appreciate all of biodiversity. Safaris that concentrate on the “Big Five” miss so much. As an artist, I also want to celebrate the smaller, yet remarkably beautiful, creatures that don’t get the exposure that do the megafauna like elephants, rhinos, lions, and the like. Let’s spot those little pearls too!
