The Aye-aye is perhaps the most bizarre of all the primates if you exclude humans. Found only in Madagascar, this nocturnal mammal was thought extinct in 1933, but small numbers persist today, and it is protected as an Endangered species. Its bizarre anatomy and nocturnality led to superstitions that it was an evil creature and a harbinger of death, so the Malagasy people feared and killed it on sight. A much larger Aye-aye is found only as subfossils, and it was apparently killed out by early settlers to this island-continent. Let’s ensure that this unique animal survives the destructive appetites of modern humans.
