The Mexican Wolf came perilously close to extinction, and only a diligent captive breeding program saved this population. There are still more in captivity than in the wild in Arizona and New Mexico, and genetic diversity is low. Some ranchers illegally kill these animals, so I chose to show a close-up portrait to emphasize the regal, non-threatening appearance of the wolf.
