One of the largest, most powerful eagles in the world, the Martial Eagle has been compared to the leopard for the spots on its breast when mature and the diversity of prey it captures. More than 30 species of ungulates, mainly smaller antelopes, have been taken by this powerful African raptor. This power has earned it the ire of many people, who suspect it of killing livestock, though the threat is likely exaggerated. Still, human persecution has reduced its numbers until it is now listed as Endangered. This apex predator doesn’t reach full maturity until 6 years of age, so populations cannot withstand current rates of shooting and poisoning. I chose to depict this magnificent bird at peace, deserving of respect rather than hatred. Its existence implies a healthy ecosystem. We have learned in many cases to admire and protect large mammalian predators; can’t we do the same for one of the most spectacular birds of prey?
