While elephants and rhinos have claimed a lot of the attention of conservationists, many bird species are under severe threat in Africa. Despite its recognition as the National Bird of Uganda, the Gray Crowned-Crane has suffered major population declines in recent decades across its range in sub-Saharan Africa and is classified as Endangered.  Destruction of wetlands and grasslands, extensive pesticide use, drought, and live-trapping of chicks for the animal trade have all contributed to its decline.  Human population growth continues to create stresses of many kinds, all likely to be exacerbated by climate change. Cranes form tight pair bonds, so I chose to portray a tender moment so typical of these charming birds.  Protection of wetlands and other vital ecosystems would go a long way to help maintain the incredible diversity for which Africa is famous.
