Usually seen perched high and watching the ground for rodent action, the Long-crested Eagle is viewed as a friend to the farmer and thus rarely persecuted, unlike some other birds of prey. Most people recognize it by its long, floppy crest, so when I show this pose to my African friends, they often can’t identify it. The bold, white wing patches are also a useful identification cue. While an erect, perched bird would make a nice portrait, I wanted the challenge of showing the subtleties of open wings, and pastels turned out to be my medium of choice.
