Critically endangered, Black Rhinos have been pushed to the brink of extinction by human demand for their horns, either for supposed medicinal properties (completely apocryphal) or for fancy dagger handles (male vanity). Tanzania, with the aid of international conservation organizations, has committed significant resources to rebuilding rhino numbers in a special reserve within Mkomazi National Park. In my three visits to the rhino project, I have been impressed with the program and simply charmed by these rare and magnificent animals. My painting shows 11 Red-billed Oxpeckers foraging on parasites on the massive body of a rhino. If Africa’s megafauna should go extinct, other species would surely suffer, as well. The fate of these remarkable creatures is entirely in the hands of humans.
