This saddle was made by the famous Hawaiian cowboy, Ikua Purdy.  The saddle was given as a gift to Mr. Michael Baldwin of Tucson, Arizona when he was 12 years old by his father.  Mr. Baldwin grew up in a ranch called Ulupalakua in Maui, Hawaii where Mr. Purdy worked.

Mr. Baldwin commissioned me to do a drawing of this beloved heirloom.  I took the saddle home and spent several days cleaning it and making shine.  Then I took many pictures to figure out how best to portray this beautiful antiquity.  I took it to a local steakhouse where they have some original antique corral and posed the saddle over the wooden structures.  We chose to present it in the drawing as a simple portrait.  No background or foreground that could take away from the details.

"Montura Paniolo"
