Hofmeisteria crassifolia grows from crevices on rock and cliffs.  It is endemic to San Pedro Nolasco Island and the Guaymas region.

It was my first day in San Carlos, Sonora in March of 2011 with a group of artists that went down to Mexico to get ready for the “Sea of Cortez” exhibit.  I drove a few of the artists to Nacapule Canyon.  It was early in the afternoon and the sun was very bright, a few minutes after we entered the canyon I noticed this wildflower growing out of a crevice in this huge boulder on the side of the trail.  The beautiful puffy pale lavender flowers glowed!

The Nacapule Canyon is a true oasis supporting palm trees, fig trees, frogs and countless number of other non-desert life forms in the midst of a very arid desert environment.  This is the Sonoran Desert!

After my preliminary sketch of this painting, I decided to mask (using masking fluid) the flowers very carefully along with the stems in preparation to first paint the dark, strong background.  I decided it was important for the background to be intense to make those flowers stand out.  It was interesting to see that the leafy plant itself, because of so much detail, took me at least twice as much time to paint, as it took me to do the rest of the painting.

“Belleza Radiante”

Hofmeisteria crassifolia crece en las fisuras de las rocas y peñascos.  Es endémica de la región de la isla San Pedro Nolasco y Guaymas.

Este era mi primer día en San Carlos, Sonora en marzo del 2011 con un grupo de artistas que fueron a México para prepararse para la exhibición “Mar de Cortés”.  Llevé a algunos de los artistas al Cañón de Nacapule.  Era temprano en la tarde y el sol brillaba bastante, unos pocos minutos después de que entramos al cañón noté esta flor silvestre creciendo de entre la fisura de esta roca grandísima a un lado del sendero.  ¡Las hermosas flores lilas pálidas resplandecían!

El Canon de Nacapule es un verdadero oasis que sustenta palmas, higueras, ranas y una innumerable cantidad de formas de vida no-desérticas en un área de medio ambiente de desierto árido.  ¡Este es el desierto sonorense!

Después de mi boceto preeliminar de la pintura, decidí cubrir las flores y tallos muy cuidadosamente con un líquido para enmascarar en preparación para primero pintar el fondo oscuro y potente.  Decidí que era muy importante que el fondo fuera intenso para que las flores resaltaran.  Fue interesante ver que la planta con tantas hojitas, por tanto, detalle, me tomó por lo menos el doble del tiempo que me tomó pintar el resto de la pintura.
