The only coral reefs of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) are found in this small area of Baja California Sur called Cabo Pulmo.  They are the reason why Cabo Pulmo became a national park on June 6, 1995, now home to more than 300 species of fish and more than 500 species of invertebrates.

The success of this national park has been achieved mainly because its residents have been active participants in its protection from the start.  This protection has allowed the recovery of many species in great biomasses and the return of many others.  The sharks, considered an element of a healthy ecosystem, are becoming a common sight in the park.

In this painting I wanted to illustrate a little piece of the beauty of corals that form an underwater garden.  I took many videos during several dives and several trips.  After reviewing them it was clear to me that there were so many “spots” I wanted to paint, but the “one” I wanted needed to be from a different angle.  I realized most of my video was taken from strait below me so on the following trip I focused on finding a “coralscape” from straight ahead.  This one caught my eye as we were approaching it on the dive almost as I could barely see it.  The visibility was not too bad, and I could tell from far this spot looked perfect!

I saw the Panamic porkfish for the first time when we were diving one of the coral reefs.  The fish were so bright, and they seemed to be swimming very close together and staying very close to the corals.  From the moment I decided to paint a coral piece I new I had to include the porkfish!

Los únicos arrecifes coralinos del Golfo de California (Mar de Cortés) se encuentran en esta pequeña área de Baja California Sur llamada Cabo Pulmo. Ellos son la razón por la cual Cabo Pulmo se convirtió en un parque nacional el 6 de junio de 1995, ahora hogar de más de 300 especies de peces y más de 500 especies de invertebrados.

El éxito de este parque nacional ha sido logrado principalmente porque sus residentes han sido activos participantes en su protección desde el principio.  Esta protección ha permitido la recuperación de muchas especies en grandes biomasas y el regreso de muchas otras.  Los tiburones, considerados un elemento de un ecosistema saludable, están convirtiéndose en un avistamiento frecuente.

En esta pintura quería ilustrar un pequeño pedazo de la belleza de los corales que forman un jardín submarino.  Tome muchos videos durante varios buceos y varios viajes.  Después de revisarlos se me hizo claro que había muchos “sitios” que quería pintar, pero “el” que yo quería necesitaba ser desde un ángulo diferente.  Me di cuenta de que la mayoría de mi video fue tomado derecho hacia abajo de me así que en el siguiente viaje me enfoqué en encontrar un “paisaje coralino” en dirección hacia enfrente.  Este me llamo la atención cuando nos estábamos acercando a él en el buceo casi cuando apenas podía verlo.  ¡La visibilidad no estaba tan mala, y podía darme cuenta desde lejos que este sitio se veía perfecto!

Vi a los burros bandera por primera vez cuando buceamos en los arrecifes coralinos.  Los peces estaban tan brillantes, y parecían estar nadando muy juntos y manteniéndose muy cerca de los corales.  ¡Desde el momento que decidí pintar una obra de corales sabía que tenía que incluir a los burros bandera!
