Whether an artist paints landscapes, still life, portraits, or animals, David's workshops focus on skills needed to create the illusion of depth and great design. Whether the fold of a piece of fabric, a mountain in the distance, a stream running through the forest or a bird perched on a limb, David believes "it's the grand illusion of depth combined with great design that brings a painting to life."

He offers workshops primarily for intermediate and advanced artists. He wants artists to "own" each procedure whether a specific wash or recognizing where the dominant dark should be placed, he wants each artist to confidently fulfill their own vision.

David loves the opportunity to work with artists across the country and is looking forward to this year. If you or your organization is interested in a workshop in your area, please email Deanna Rankin at rankinworkshops@gmail.com

3-Day Workshop |   When you look at a painting, you either like it or you don’t. You have an emotional response. How do you create that positive reaction? The better your values and focal point are, the more positive response the viewer will have—whatever the subject.    Emotion in watercolor is all about the middle values and the placement of the dominant darks. In this workshop David will train artists in the numerous ways to create depth and emotional impact with any subject. Through innovative training procedures you will see dramatic results flow from your brush to your paper.    Bring 2... +Read More

Wednesday, 9 September, 2020 to Friday, 11 September, 2020
Watercolor's unique relationship with the white of the paper lends itself perfectly to subjects where snow is a major feature. The shadows that fall over snow, the reflected light, the abstracted design of the landscape, all of these elements make complex snow scenes both dramatic and challenging. During these 3-days, you will work with the many variations—the soft shadows, reflections, light flowing over forms, both warm and cool, complex values, and bright and muted colors.  Learn to observe Nature’s value structure the way the old Masters did, and how to employ that skill to create more... +Read More
