Desert Bighorn Sheep were once abundant across the Southwestern US deserts. Their populations declined rapidly after 1850 due to habitat destruction, diseases introduced by domestic European sheep and competition with introduced species such as the Burro. Desert Bighorn Sheep generally avoid people, but I was lucky to witness a small herd in the wild as they came down the mountain for a drink. The individual depicted in this painting was beating a hasty retreat after he lost a skirmish with a larger ram, apparently fighting over some tasty vegetation.
