A Quiet Repose
Since I moved to the lower mainland, it soon became my quest to collect enough reference material on these graceful fishing birds to be able to compose a painting. You need to be very stealth as I find these birds very skittish, making it difficult to get up close and personal. The Great Blue Heron is classified as a species at risk due to their quickly diminishing habitat. They are protected by the British Columbia's wildlife act.
Because Great Blue Herons depend on wetlands for feeding and on relatively undisturbed sited for breeding, they are vulnerable to habitat loss and to impacts such as traffic, logging, and other human intrusions that can disrupt nesting colonies. Other threats include chemical pollutants and reduced water quality.
