Long View
When I first encountered Maasai giraffes in southern Kenya, I was struck not only by their height, but by their calm watchfulness and the ease with which they seemed to belong to the African landscape. Their deliberate movements, intricate patterns, and quiet presence left a lasting impression.
In Long View, I used graphite and soft atmospheric shading to allow the giraffe to emerge gradually from the background. Rather than presenting it simply as a familiar symbol of Africa, I wanted to convey an individual animal—alert, composed, and quietly powerful.
The drawing reflects my admiration for a species whose identity is inseparable from the savannas and woodlands it inhabits. I hope it encourages viewers to look beyond the giraffe’s unmistakable silhouette and consider the importance of conserving connected habitats and supporting the people who live alongside Africa’s wildlife.
Long View was selected for the juried Kingdom Animalia 2026 online exhibition, held June 18–August 18, 2026.
