Blue Vigil
Great Blue Herons have been a familiar presence throughout my life. I have encountered them along ponds, lakes, rivers, marshes, and estuaries, as well as flying overhead through landscapes far removed from water. Their adaptability makes them familiar, yet their appearance never feels ordinary.
In Blue Vigil, the heron stands poised on a weathered branch, its focused gaze and dagger-like bill suggesting complete attention to its surroundings. I used graphite to emphasize the sweeping breast plumes, layered wing feathers, long toes, and subtle textures that give the bird both elegance and strength.
The drawing reflects my admiration for the species’ quiet vigilance and stoic presence—qualities that have continued to impress me despite decades of observation.
