"Can I Help You?"
Luckily in British Columbia we are graced with these handsome ducks year round. Considered one of the most stunning waterfowl in the world with iridescent chestnut, blue and green feathers, I intentionally drew this fellow in black and white to focus on ornate feather patterns and his curious personality. Populations of wood ducks (Aix sponsa) were in serious decline at the beginning of the 20th century. Natural cavities for nesting remain scarce, however, thanks to conservation efforts, they readily use artificial nest boxes across North America. This has helped their numbers rebound today to a species of least concern.
