Whooping Cranes Landing
Original Watercolor on Arches 140# cold press paper. Unframed. Whooping Cranes Landing is one of four commissioned watercolors I created for the Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Gardens in 2013 to celebrate the opening of the park's Whooping Crane exhibit. The paintings were printed on banners that lined the walkway taking visitors to the new Whooping Crane exhibit. The banners interpreted the journey of the eastern population of Whooping Cranes as they were assisted in their recovery and migration. This painting depicts the return of migrating Whooping Cranes to their fledging ground, the place where they hatched and first learned to fly. Their return to nest and breed represents hope and renewal for the survival of this endangered species.
The other paintings in this series of four watercolors are: Learning to Eat, Ultra-light Led Migration, and Hatched.
