The Southern White-faced Owl is neither rare nor endangered but when I first saw this owl hidden in a tangle of limbs, all I could say was, "Look at that face!". A small grey-backed owl of southern Africa, it has a distinctive white facial disc and unbelievably bright orange eyes. These eyes play a special role in helping the owl's vision during the low-light hunting hours of dawn and dusk. Ranked among the many wildlife species valued for their role in the balance of nature.
