Conservation

"My concern for this earth, for wildlife and wildlife habitat, runs deep. We are all watching our natural habitats and their dependent wildlife decline at an alarming rate. I cannot imagine a time in the future where conservation will not be front and center in my mind. "

Bird Conservation: The Discover Birds Activity Book was authored and illustrated by Vickie Henderson, with activities developed by scientists and educators to help students learn about birds. A project involving many hours and many volunteers. My dream for this book was that it would inspire students to love birds and create our world's future conservationists. The book was published in 2013 by the Tennessee Ornithological Society and distributed free. A Spanish version was created in 2017. Both the English and the Spanish versions are available online. As of June 2026, nearly 50,000 books have been distributed free to children in Tennessee and other US states. The Spanish version has been distributed to teachers in Cuba. In 2020, I was contacted by Carlos Jose Diaz-Garcia, a civil engineer, Scout leader and head of Asociacion Civil Jabiru, a non-government conservation organization in Venezuela, with a request for permission to adapt the activity book to include birds of Venezuela and South America. Permission was granted and the scouts not only identified the birds they wanted to include, they created posters and a video and used social media to educate their community, teaching them about their birds so they can protect the habitat they need. Four years later in 2024, fifteen year old Ana Isabel Vasquez Garcia, a member of the Grupo Scout Guanaguanare, applied for a national grant with the Asociacion de Scouts de Venezuela. Her request was granted! The name of her project is: Discovering Birds: Promoters of Environment Culture in my Community. This project is underway and I look forward to supporting it.
