Winter Predator - Snowy Owl
Winter in the Champlain Valley can bring remarkable visitors from the far north. The striking Snowy Owl travels south from its Arctic breeding grounds each winter in search of food. While some remain in Canada, others hunt the open fields and shorelines of Lake Champlain, and some move farther south to the shores of the coastal US.
These beautiful raptors favor wide, open landscapes that resemble the tundra they call home. During some winters they can be seen perched in the cornfields and marshes of the region, scanning the landscape for prey before gliding silently across the snow.
