Long-tailed Duck on Migration
Each spring and fall Long-tailed Ducks travel along the waterways connected by the St. Lawrence Seaway, moving between coastal wintering grounds in the sea and their Arctic breeding areas. During migration they often pause on large inland lakes, and they can sometimes be seen resting and feeding on Lake Champlain. This painting celebrates a fleeting moment with one of these elegant travelers as it passes through our region on its long seasonal journey.
This painting is included of the 2026 “Wings • Waters • Ways” juried exhibition at the Birds of Vermont Museum! The exhibit runs May 1–October 31, celebrating the connections between people, birds, and waterways.
