This 12” x 12” Oil Painting on wood panel captures a moment with one of nature’s most dazzling little birds - the Common Kingfisher. Perched quietly on a weathered branch, this vibrant hunter rests between dives, its brilliant plumage catching the light like a living gem.

Though small in size, the kingfisher commands attention with its electric blue feathers, bright orange chest, and sharp, focused gaze. Often spotted near rivers and streams, it lives a fast-paced life - darting low over water and plunging in after tiny fish with remarkable speed and precision. But here, for just a moment, it’s still.

This portrait celebrates that pause. The contrast of the bird’s vivid colors against the muted tones of the dead branch and soft background evokes the balance between energy and stillness, life and decay. It’s a quiet tribute to the beauty of the ordinary - one you might miss if you’re not looking closely.

In painting this scene, I hoped to honor not just the kingfisher’s striking appearance, but also the delicate, watchful presence it holds in the wild. A reminder that even the briefest encounters with nature can leave a lasting impression.
