Salmon Arm Foreshore Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk and Wildlife Viewing Platform
SABNES is planning to build a new Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk with a learning platform at the end. This is more than just a structure; it’s an opportunity to preserve access to one of the few remaining urban wetlands where 282 bird species thrive, including the remarkable Western Grebes and their courtship dance.

The Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society (SABNES) is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the urban wetland areas in Salmon Arm Bay. Our mission is to foster understanding and appreciation of our natural surroundings through educational opportunities and to ensure the conservation of local wildlife habitats for future generations. Over the years, SABNES has successfully orchestrated multiple community events focused on environmental education and has established various public engagement initiatives aimed at promoting the sustainable use of our natural resources.
The rebuilding of Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk and Wildlife Viewing platform will provide an outdoor learning space and quiet place to rest and relax.
Background:
The SABNES Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk is an ambitious initiative led by the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society (SABNES) and its Board of Directors. This project arises from the need to replace an old, unsafe boardwalk and create a new space that serves both educational and recreational purposes. The main objective is to construct a boardwalk that will stretch from the water's edge to a platform specifically designed for group learning experiences. This platform will be an ideal spot for observing and studying local wildlife, especially the birds inhabiting the area.
Several key organizations are supporting the project, each bringing their unique expertise and resources. SABNES is collaborating with the Shuswap Community Foundation, Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union, The City of Salmon Arm, and The Shuswap Trail Alliance. These organizations have joined forces to ensure that the boardwalk becomes a sustainable and educational asset for the community.
One of the major challenges encountered during the planning phase was the rising costs associated with construction. This is a common issue in large-scale projects and necessitates careful financial planning and potentially additional fundraising efforts to manage.
While construction has not yet begun, there is optimism for progress once environmental conditions are favorable. The team plans to start construction after the nesting season concludes in mid-August, which respects the local ecosystem and minimizes disruption to resident wildlife.
The boardwalk’s anticipated impact, though not yet realized due to the pending start of construction, is expected to significantly benefit both the community and the environment. It aims to provide a peaceful area for residents and visitors, offering excellent opportunities for nature observation and education. Detailed plans for the boardwalk have been drafted by Marc Lamerton, an architectural engineer, ensuring that the design is both functional and aesthetically integrated with its natural surroundings.
Installation of helix screw piles is scheduled for January 2025. These foundational components are vital for the boardwalk's stability and longevity, representing another milestone in the project's timeline. Overall, the SABNES Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk is set to be a valuable addition to Salmon Arm, fostering deeper connections with nature and enhancing community engagement through shared learning experiences.
