This modern-day dinosaur, the southern cassowary is endangered in Australia and its population still declining with only 4000 left in the wild.  The cassowary's habitat is increasingly restricted and fragmented and vehicle strikes and dog attacks continue to affect their numbers. The cassowary has an important role to play in the ecosystem, because as a fruit-eater, it is important in the dispersal of seeds.
