Madagascar - Creatures of the Night I
“Frogs are the only amphibians found in Madagascar, and ninety-nine percent of its frog species are believed to be endemic. Recently, hundreds more have been discovered, even in well studied areas, leading scientists to believe that many more are still unknown. Studies suggest that the total biodiversity in Madagascar could be much higher in other species as well. Where biodiversity is concerned, Madagascar remains one of the most critically threatened areas in the world, with estimates that only about eight percent of its original forest cover is still intact. I felt privileged to have had the opportunity to observe some of these creatures, which are found nowhere else on earth. This is the first of what I hope will become a series of paintings depicting my observations during a number of night walks.”
