Ring-tailed lemurs (known as Maky in Malagasi) are among the most iconic of Madagascar’s unique creatures. Though charming in the daylight, their first encounter with European explorers in the 16th century were as haunting howls in the darkness and beady eyes reflecting the flickering campfires. The name lemur therefore comes from Latin Lemures meaning ‘spirits of the dead’.
