It is the grizzly bear that comes to mind when people thing about wondering in the wilds of the northern Rocky Mountains. "Do you carry a gun?" is a common question when I speak of hiking in these areas. The answer, of course, is no. I am wandering into their home, and find the idea of using lethal force against these creatures abhorrent. Luckily, non-lethal bear spray is more effective in driving off a bear in a negative encounter, so I don't even have to make that argument. It is my great hope that grizzlies will always wander in the wild in the northern rockies. They are a part of this place and deserve to have space to live and wander.
