Diatoms are single-celled aquatic algae, which convert atmospheric carbon dioxide to oxygen, supplying an estimated 20% to 50% of the air we breathe. They can be particular about their habitat – its salinity, current strength, depth or pH level. Climate change will affect these variables – for example, increasing ocean acidity or reducing waterway depth or strength – posing serious threats to diatoms.
