Roy is one of the Ol Pejeta chimps, from tehir sanctuary at Sweetwaters. I took the reference photo in 2017.

The painting was begun with detailed pen and ink work for th efacial wrinkles, then loose wet-on-wet washes were built up to lay th egroundwork for thehair and planes of the face. Careful attention to the reference was paid as I added dimension and highlights to each "pebble" of skin, striving for that aged, wrinkled, leathery look. I over-glazed teh wrinkles in washes of Prussian Blue, Payne's Grey and Alazarin Crimson for effect and used Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna Light and Alazarin Crimson for the irises of his eyes. Finally I painted in the hairs in gouache.
