The golden plover is a beautiful and elegant birds that breeds in wetlands. Once, many pairs were breeding in Germany, but sadly, due to drainage and exploitation of wetlands their occurance in Germany shrinked to a tiny place in only one mire in Norther Germany. Wetlands are so important, both regarding their role as carbon sinks and being diversity hotspots as last refuges for rare species. It is always a pleasure to observe many golden plovers from Scandinavia during migration period, and I wish that they become homely again in Germany.
