We have a black bear on our property. From time to time we see signs, but we've actually only seen it in person once. I find it reassuring that it lives near us, for it reminds me that we have a healthy ecosystem. They have an important role, helping to keep deer population in check, spreading seeds and helping fertilize the forest floor. As I learn more I realize that there are so many animals that play a significant role and we can learn a lot from them. We've learned to live in harmony with this bear and I'm sure it is aware of our presence (bear bells and boisterous kids help with that). As we learn how to be better stewards of our property we try to make decisions that will help this bear thrive. This bear and our experience living with it is the inspiration behind the painting, "Bearly see Me".
