The Raccoon is a native of North America. In the wild, they have a lifespan of only 2 to 3 years, but in captivity they have been known to live over 20 years. Hunting and being hit by cars are the main cause of their shortened lifespans. Originally their habitat were deciduous and mixed forests, along with mountains and coastal regions. They are omnivorous, which is helpful in keeping their populations growing. With urban sprawl, they have been able to adapt to their diets to urban environments and loss of natural habitat, and are often found eating out of backyard garbage cans. They are highly intelligent animals and have very dexterous front paws! They are nocturnal, so catching a glimpes of these "midnight bandits" is a wonderful treat. However, they should be treated as any wild animal, giving them space and respect.
