Protecting America's Wild Horses

Supporting Conservation and Protection of America's Wild Horses
Edit Conservation Project/Cause Protecting America's Wild Horses - Supporting Conservation and Protection of America's Wild Horses | Sandra Byland
The wild horses of America, the Mustangs, are continually under tremendous concern due to loss of habitat, food sources and water resources. The horse is a native species of North America, having crossed the Bering Straight at a distant past, but continuing to thrive in North America up to at least 5,000 years ago! They returned to the Americas when Spanish explorers came to the new world, and through the centuries these beautiful and magnificent creatures regained their foothold in their original native land. Today, there are currently around 70,000 free-ranging mustangs in the U.S., according to the America's Mustang program. Mustang numbers declined dramatically in the 20th century as the horses were killed and captured for a variety of reasons, including for human and dog food. The Cloud Foundation is very important to me and serving these beautiful horses through my artwork is one of the passions and purposes of my life. I am currently working on a show to portray these beautiful horses to instill that passion in others in hopes of helping the horses to survive in healthy and sustainable environments, protected as we protect other wild species. I am hoping to have this body of work ready for showing by the Fall of 2022.

The project is a body of artwork portraying the beauty and majesty of our wild horses to ignite a passion in others to give to the cause of saving them through the efforts of the Cloud Foundation.

I have had horses all of my life, including a mustang named Jigsaw -- the horse that I grew up with. He was a black and white pinto and was an exceptionally powerful influence on the person I became and the paths I took in my life as a wildlife artist, a horse artist, an Animal Chaplain, a Humane Educator and a conservationist. The heart and soul of the horse has been an intregal part of human history -- they have carried us to new lands, pulled our wagons, plowed our fields, driven our fire engines, carried soldiers in battle and died along side of us in those battles. Over 35,000 years ago they inspired an artist in the Chauvey Cave in France to portray the most beautiful prehistoric horse cave paintings I have ever seen. They have always been with us in our most treasured art. And horses have become our friends. And now, the wild horses of the Americas are in danger of disappearing from this landscape once more. It is time that we give back to these beautiful creatures who deserve at least some space and chance to run free, healthy and happy and safe.

There will be more coming on my Wild Horses of America artshow as the months go along. Please consider supporting The Cloud Foundation as they work tirelessly to protect our beautiful wild horses.
