During the 1800's and early 1900's, huge numbers of snowy egrets were killed for their immaculate white breeding plumes to satisfy the millinery trade. Nesting colonies of these elegant birds made them 'sitting ducks' as they were easy targets for hunters. This resulted in a severe population decline. Thankfully, through efforts of concerned citizens to curtail the plume trade in 1910 within North America, the species has largely recovered from that threat. Today, wetland destruction remains the greatest threat to snowy egrets, along with disturbance of nesting colonies
