While artist in residence one year at Kingfisher Bay Resort, Fraser Island, I was entertained by this beautiful young Lace Monitor for over 2 hours. I don't think it was my pleasant company that attracted him, rather the fact that the top of the Banksia was level with the upstairs veranda where I was eating lunch. These large lizards have wonderful eyesight and are amazing hunters, but numbers are in decline due to habitat destruction and the introduced cane toad being toxic when eaten.
