nspired by a unique scene at China’s first coastal Natural World Heritage Site in Tiaozini, Jiangsu Province, where the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpipers meet the Endangered Black-faced Spoonbill, during high tide at a 46ha water bird roost, recently converted from an aquaculture pond for conservation purpose. Threatened from loss of wetland habitat due to reclamation and development, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper is at the verge of extinction. Such a protected roost and surrounding wetland ecosystem is vital to conservation of the species and many other threatened water birds in the East Asian – Australasian Flyway. While the Black-faced Spoonbill has been the most successful water bird conservation initiative in East Asia over the past decades, we have strong hope that such a harmonic scene could still be enjoyed by generations to come.
