"On My Way" - Young Eastern Box Turtle
This bronze sculpture, which was originally one of my basswood carvings, began one beautiful summer day in Virginia when my daughter and I found a young eastern box turtle near our mailbox. Just after a rain, her colors were so beautiful, it looked like she was draped with a quilt!
As a child, I always thought a smallish box turtle was "a baby". But while living in southwestern Missouri, I discovered what a true baby box turtle actually looks like... about the size of a quarter!! So, in truth, our mailbox beauty was already 5 or 6 years old! Box turtles (which are land-dwelling turtles, not tortoises) can live 50-100+ years!
After admiring and photographing our young beauty that summer day, we wished her a happy life and bid her goodbye, gently returning her to her own smalll home territory. But that encounter stayed with me for several years, until one day, I picked up my knife and gouges and once again brought forth that special memory in art.
