Pastel is one of the most permanent and versatile of all painting mediums, allowing for many corrections and layers to build up to beautiful paintings. They are immediate, spontaneous and allow the use of both subtle and vibrant color and many different painting styles. We will discuss different types of papers and pastels as well as application of different kinds of strokes to achieve various painterly effects. There will be a short demonstration of a landscape painting. Then students will do a landscape painting from a photograph and will learn how to begin, proceed and finish a painting, as well as how to avoid and overcome common problems. We will work on the basics of drawing and composing a painting and using color, with special focus on painting trees, skies and other landscape elements. There will be plenty of personal attention given to each student.
