Butterflies, like most insects, are suffering precipitous declines.  This particular species, the swallowtail, is so far fairly safe in numbers.  I found this particular butterfly after it had died, and I learned how to open the wings using moisture to display it for painting.  The painting is partly egg tempera, and finished in oils.
