Forest Gate
BACKGROUND
This piece was created in response to concerns about locked gates, ending caretaker programs, and development surrounding some B.C. parks, including the one next to my home. It was my response to a provincial call for artists for a juried exhibition on the theme of "Fences" at Two Rivers Public Art Gallery in Prince George. The piece was completed in late November 2017 and exhibited in Prince George from January to April 2018, but the original was not available for sale at that time. The painting will be available for sale this fall, in connection with the 2020 AFC exhibit.
This piece was selected to be included in the AFC's 13th annual live exhibit, raising awareness of conservation issues and supporting organizations dedicated to them. The show opens at Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver, B.C., this fall.
MICRO/MACRO AND MAGIC
I live on the fence line of an 8.7-hectare nature conservancy in Kelowna. Woodhaven Park opens to the hills and trails at the back, but with tall chain-link fences on three sides. For wildlife, the gate creates a dead end before housing and roads. In my paintings, I express something of nature’s spillover from within the contained areas, the beauty of what was once there, the hopeful glimpses still present, and the potential for rebound.
