During the 19th and early 20th centuries the African savannah became a magnet and Mecca for white hunters.  The vast plains and abundance and variety of game then, attracted trophy hunters from around the world.

The lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino were regarded the five most sought after big game trophies and of course, were the most dangerous to hunt.

The buffalo and leopard were generally considered the deadliest of the big five when wounded and being followed up.  Both species have the tenacity to patiently wait to ambush the hunter at close range and sometimes in the case of the buffalo, carefully double back, wait unseen and ferociously charge the unwary.

Although I have drawn a white rhino which normally is twice the size and weight of the black rhino, the small short-sighted hook-lipped rhino is more aggressive, wounded or otherwise.

This drawing won the Kenneth jack Memorial Drawing Award at AGRA Gallery, Melbourne 2015
