Megantereon cultridens was an early North American representative of the smilodontins, a tribe of sabertoothed cats that was a direct ancestor of the famous sabertoothed cat of the La Brea Tar Pits, Smilodon fatalis. Sabertooths were ambush predators, and although their coat patterning is unknown it may have consisted of spot and/or stripe combinations, like leopards or tigers.
