This painting documents the actual presence of both a short-faced bear (Arctotherium simum) and a columbian mammoth, (Mammuthus columbi), whose bones were found in Ice Age clay deposits at the Hot Springs Site of South Dakota, a natural prey and predator trap. Although there is no proof, the artist has here conjectured that a female mammoth may have struck the bear unconcious when it attempted to prey on the mammoth's calf who had slipped and fallen into the pool.
