This painting focuses on some of the gems within nature: the New Zealand Tui and water droplets found on the flax and web. The New Zealand Tui has two voiceboxes which enables it to perform a myriad of vocalisations, including the ability to imitate human speech. Each Tui has a different call that combines bellbird-like notes with clicks, cackles, timber-like creaks and groans, and wheezing sounds.
