Welcome swallows are gregarious native New Zealand birds found commonly throughout most of the country. In autumn and winter, the birds gather in flocks, many of them migrating to more northern or coastal parts of New Zealand. Flocks often perch en masse, lined up on fences or power lines. This painting shows the birds converging on a power line with a possible squabble about to occur as one swallow attempts to land on the top of a post which is already occupied by another.
